The International Board Certified Lactation Consultant or IBCLC represents the "gold standard" in lactation consultant credentialing.
IBLCE, the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners develops and administers the certification examination for International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). The IBLCE examination is the premier measure of competence in lactation consulting. It is an international certification and the examination is administered in multiple languages and at numerous sites around the world.
Eligibility Requirements for IBCLC Certification
There are three pathways one can take to qualify for the IBLCE certification exam. Each of these three pathways specify the minimum amount of education and experience in human lactation and breastfeeding a candidate for the exam must complete. All requirements must be completed prior to applying for the examination.
ILCA, the International Lactation Consultants Association, is the professional organization for lactation consultants. Membership is optional but those who participate in their professional organization are active learners and participants in this growing field of lactation consulting.
