Phospholipids are a type of lipids. They make up the cell membrane and transport DNA. Phospholipids are manufactured in the breast and transferred into the breastmilk. These are believed to play a vital role in the myelinization of the CNS.
Lipids are defined as any fat-soluble (lipophilic), naturally-occurring molecule, such as cholesterol, fats, oils, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E and K), monoglycerides, diglycerides, phospholipids, waxes and others.
What are the main functions of lipids?
What role do phospholipids play in preventing Multiple Schlerosis (MS)?
Children that lack breastmilk in their diet have abnormally unstable myelin - the protective sheath that surrounds each nerve. Theses children had a higher propensity to breakdown of the myelin in early adulthood, resulting in MS.
