Poor latch, sore nipples, and slow infant growth may be caused by tongue-tie. It is sometimes difficult for you the parent to determine a tongue tie. Posterior tongue-tie can be especially difficult to diagnose. Your baby's primary care physician will recognize the anterior tongue ties-the ones at or near the tip of the tongue because they typically give the tongue a heart shaped appearance.
Posterior tongue ties, located in the middle or at the back of tongue, may only be determined by informed and qualified professionals which may include Lactation Consultants, Breastfeeding Medicine Physicians, Speech-Language Pathologists, ENT doctors, Pediatricians. Do not assume that everyone in these professions have special training in posterior ties. ASK first!
