Feeding Cues

How do you know if your new born baby is hungry? I teach my parents in the prenatal breastfeeding class to look for:

BABY's Salubrious S's

  • Stretching
  • Squeaking
  • Squirming
  • Smacking sounds
  • 'Seeking the breast'
  • Sucking on hands or arms
  • Subtle movements under your baby's eyelids

When you see any of the above, help your baby find the breast. Once there watch for signs of drinking:

baby slowing down at the breast

  • Sucking
  • Strong jaw movements
  • Swallowing
  • Slowing down
  • Sleepiness
  • Sighing
  • Satisfied
  • Sleeping Jamie Milk Drunk

Mother's Salubrious S's

  • Singing
  • Soothing
  • Stroking
  • Swaying
  • Satisfying
  • Sighing
  • Sleeping

When your baby is breastfeeding, your body is flooded with oxytocin, the hormone of calm and connection. It is a lovely thing that happens to bond you and baby and create a sense of tranquility and peace and sleepiness. You will find yourself getting sleepy and thirsty. Your baby will look milk drunk! Relax and enjoy.
