Dairy Products:
Studies to determine what foods, if any, that a mother eats that may cause problems for her baby have shown that dairy products are the #1 offender. Mothers drinking a quart or more of cow's milk were more likely to have fussy babies with increased gas. Babies that are sensitive to cow's milk seem to do just fine with other dairy products such as yogurt, cheese and ice cream.
Some holistic practitioners contribute hiccoughs to sensitivities to foods mom ate a lot of during pregnancy. I have seen one particular baby that had hiccoughs when mom's diet included dairy, soy and beef. When she eliminated these foods the hiccoughs went away and still at 3 years he had not had any more hiccoughs. Something to 'chew' on!
Peanuts:
Peanuts seem to be fine as long as there is not a family history of peanut allergy.
As a general rule, eat whatever you like to eat. Your baby will learn to like the same foods you like from the taste of your milk. Most babies are happy for mom to eat broccolli, chocolate, cabbage and any food that tends to produces gas.As you get to know your baby you will know over time if something you eat causes discomfort for your baby.
In taste tests, babies preferred vanilla-#1- and garlic-#2- flavored milk. Most cultures do not have the luxury of changing their diets and many of those cultures eat hot and spicy foods. So, eat what you like!
