Years ago I heard this quote and marveled at the truth of it. I'd love your thoughts.
"If a multinational company developed a product that was a nutritionally balanced and delicious food, a wonder drug that both prevented and treated disease, cost almost nothing to produce and could be delivered in quantities controlled by the consumers' needs, the very announcement of their find would send their shares rocketing to the top of the stock market. The scientists who developed the product would win prizes and the wealth and influence of everyone involved would increase dramatically. Women have been producing such a miraculous substance, breastmilk, since the beginning of human existence..."

Best for Babes has written another great blog post. This time about the making of breastfeeding friendly, supportive movies. I can't believe this is actually happening. Talk about "Wake Up World!" Hollywood pretty much sets the stage, no pun intended, for what the world sees as noteworthy, interesting and well, the way they want things to be or better said the eyes they want us to look at the world through. Agreed? Movies have got to be one of the best ways to reach the multitudes with a message. So let's see, we have Formula Fed America, Latching On, Mother's Milk: The Movie. Here's the trailer from Formula Fed America due out soon.
Dr. Jack Newman asks why Sweden has a 99% breastfeeding initiation rate—significantly higher than North America. Dr. Stephen Buescher says breastmilk is not just food—it is everything the baby needs to survive. One mother dispels the myth that "I was formula fed and I turned out just fine." Did you? Did I? Did most of the sick and diseased Americans? Not when you realize that many of the benefits of breastmilk may go unnoticed for decades.
Why breastfeed? What would the babies say, if they had a voice?
BUT...there are women that would love to give their babies breastmilk, but no matter what they do, they do not produce all the milk their babies need. We must be very sensitive to these women. And many women, though they say no to breastfeeding may be saying that because breastfeeding did not work for them or they are afraid. Every woman deserves help with breastfeeding. How many athletes make it to the Olympics without a coach and people cheering them on? If you know of any, let me know. So let's be careful not to judge the mothers that choose formula, but let's be quick to help those that are choosing to breastfeed so they can succeed.
